JERSEY CITY, N.J.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated by New Jersey City University (NJCU) 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, John Jay is now 0-10 this season, while NJCU improves its record to 8-5.
The Bloodhounds had three hits in the contest and had one each by
Steven Donato,
Ryan Corrigan and
Erik Pratz. The Bloodhounds scored their first run of the contest in the fifth inning and the other in the sixth. In the fifth, catcher
Billy Moran reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Pratz to score. Then in the next inning, Luca Altamarino reached on an NJCU error as
Nick Gioia, who walked earlier in the inning, scored from third base.
The host Gothic Knights scored early in the contest to take the lead in the first inning. They scored four runs in the first to lead 4-0 after one inning. Then NJCU scored two more times in the fourth and sixth innings to lead 8-2 after six frames. Then NJCU scored another run in the bottom of the eighth to lead 9-2.
NJCU recorded seven hits, four of which came off the bat of Michael Patterson who was 4-for-5 with three runs. Matt Matlosz had one hit and drove in three runs, while Andrew Niech was 1-for-2 with a double, a run and two runs batted in. His double was the lone extra base hit by either team.
Nico Rivera started the game for John Jay and pitched two innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. The Bloodhounds got three innings of work from
Chris Cracchiolo, two from
Trevor Johnson and one from
Jose Fernandez.
John Jay returns to action on Thursday for a game at the College of Mt. St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
