RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team lost both games of a doubleheader in its 2013 conference opener as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Brooklyn College 4-0 and 9-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
In the first game, both teams had a clean battle with neither team committing an error. The visiting Bulldogs scored a run in the top of the first, and three more in the top of the sixth for all the scoring the contest would see.
John Jay had two hits in the first game, including one each from
Ashley Kersting and
Leeann Rosa.
The Bloodhounds left six runners on base in game one, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning.
Brooklyn, who had six hits in game one, was led by Amanda Bisz who was 1-for-3 with three runs batted in. She reached first base on a fielder's choice in the first inning to drive home the first run of the contest. Later she ripped a two run single to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0 at the time. Moments later she scored on a single by Meagan Cranston to cap off the scoring.
Rosa pitched game one for John Jay and allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out five. Brooklyn's Kayla Hill walked five and struck out six in the shutout win.
In game two, Brooklyn scored six runs in the top of the first to take a large lead early. Another run in the second inning by Brooklyn extended the lead to 7-0.
John Jay scored a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 7-1. A wild pitch by the Bulldogs allowed
Jennifer Varela to score from third.
The Bloodhounds edged even closer in the fifth with three runs, while sending nine batters to the plate that inning. An infield single by
Lana Kovac scored
Kalyssa Daley. Then a single up the middle by Kersting brought home
Marlin Rallas and
Jasmine Guerra to make the score 7-4.
But John Jay left the bases loaded that inning and did not have another base runner the remainder of the game. Brooklyn added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to make it a five run game en route to the game two win.
Brooklyn outhit John Jay 12-6 in the nightcap. Bisz, who pitched game two, went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a double, a run and two runs batted in. Cranston went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and two runs driven in. While pitching, Bisz allowed four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.
Sara McKenna allowed nine runs (six earned) on 12 hits for the Bloodhounds.
John Jay is back in action on Thursday for a doubleheader against Lehman College at 3:30 p.m. on Randall's Island.
