RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team picked up a pair of conference wins on Thursday afternoon as the Bloodhounds beat Lehman College 13-5 in game one and 8-0 in game two of a doubleheader. John Jay won both contests via the eight run mercy rule.
In game one, the Bloodhounds got a great performance from
Kalyssa Daley who was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run and three runs batted in. Meanwhile fellow teammates
Jasmine Guerra,
Kaylee Fry,
Leeann Rosa and
Jennifer Varela had two hits each in the opener.
All nine starters in the batting order scored at least once. Varela scored three times in the game, while Rosa scored twice.
The Bloodhounds scored five runs in the bottom of the first to establish a large lead from the outset. Daley ripped one of her two doubles in the first inning while the bases were loaded to drive in three runs. John Jay's other two runs came a moment earlier when Fry singled in a pair of runs.
After Lehman got on the board with a run in the top of the third, John Jay scored three more times in the bottom half to make the score 8-1 after three frames of softball. Varela scored after an error by Lehman with two outs. Then Guerra made them pay by driving in two unearned runs with a bases clearing triple that scored Daley and
Jamie Lam.
The Lightning edged closer with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 8-3. But the Bloodhounds answered right back. Varela led off the inning by blasting a homerun to left-center field. Then later in the inning, pinch runner
Jocelyn Ocasio scored from third on a sacrifice fly by
Lana Kovac.
Lehman though scored a few more runs to keep the game within striking range. Lightning shortstop Janet Ortiz laced a two run homer to make the score 10-5 for the moment. For the game, Ortiz went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a homerun. She scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, John Jay put the game away. First, Lam walked with the bases loaded to score
Sara McKenna. Then Varela raced home on a wild pitch, scoring for the third time in the game to win it for the Bloodhounds.
Rosa earned the game one win after pitching six innings and allowing five runs, with only one earned, on five hits. She walked six and struck out four batters.
In game two, the Bloodhounds scored four times in the first inning to set the pace once again. McKenna dominated the Lightning lineup in the second game. She pitched five innings and allowed just one hit and three base runners, while walking none and striking out six in the win.
At the plate, Fry was 3-for-3 with a homerun, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Five other players had one hit each, including Guerra, Varela, Kersting, Rosa and McKenna.
With John Jay ahead 6-0, Fry delivered what tuned out to be the game ending blow as she delivered a two out, two run homer to put the Bloodhounds ahead 8-0. McKenna then pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fifth to conserve the eight run lead and win it for John Jay.
