BRONX, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team won their first conference game of the year as the Bloodhounds split a doubleheader with Lehman College on Saturday afternoon.

The split moves the Bloodhounds to 2-11 (1-4 CUNYAC) this season, while Lehman College is now 6-7 (2-3 CUNYAC).

In the first game, the Bloodhounds had a masterpiece performance from ace starter, junior Braylin Perez who went the distance and allowed two hits and struckout eight en route to a two-hit shutout.

In the fast paced game one, a pitcher's duel percolated with neither team allowing a run through four innings. While Perez dazzled, Lehman starter, Wilfredo Gonzalez matched strides.  Through the first four innings, the 5-6 sophomore hurler limited the Bloodhounds to no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.

But in the top of the fifth, John Jay came around and scored the only four runs the contest saw. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Luca Altamirano blasted a bases clearing double to make the score 3-0. Then with Altamirano on third, he came in to score on a fielder's choice grounder by Dennis Lopez.

The Bloodhounds had five hits in the opener, including two from Nico Rivera who was 2-for-3 with a double and a run, while Ronald Barillas was 2-for-3 with a double.

Lehman's Kevin Hernandez and Onix Mejia accounted for John Jay's only two hits in game one.

In game two, the Bloodhounds failed to capitalize on an abundance of Lehman fielding woes, as the Lightning made six errors.

John Jay was limited to one hit in game two, which came off the bat of Altamirano who led off the contest with a bunt single. But between Lehman's errors, six walks allowed and two hit batsmen, the Bloodhounds inherited plenty of base runners. But John Jay failed to deliver the big hit as the Bloodhounds stranded 10 runners in the game.

Lehman scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Miguel Nunez reached base on John Jay's only error of the game, then later scored on a single by Michael Laing.

The Bloodhounds capitalized on some Lehman's errors in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Erik Pratz, who reached on an error to start the inning, scored after a failed pick off by the Lehman catcher rolled into left field. Then moments later, designated hitter Steven Donato, with two outs, reached on a fielder's choice, that allowed Lopez to score.

But Lehman came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie it as a sacrifice fly by Alberto German scored Hernandez, who walked earlier in the inning. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Lehman took the lead when a double by Waldo Acosta scored pinch runner, Socrates Peralta, who pinch ran for Edwin Marrero after blasting a double to center field.

Rivera suffered the game two loss after pitching 1.1 innings of relief and allowed a run on two hits. Chris Cracchiolo started the contest and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out five.

Michael Santana picked up the win for Lehman after allowing two runs (both unearned) on one hit. He struck out seven batters.
