RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team won a pair of games on Thursday afternoon as the Bloodhounds beat the College of New Rochelle in both games of a doubleheader. John Jay won game one 10-1 before winning game two 11-3. Both games were won via the five inning mercy rule.
In the first game, John Jay scored all 10 of its runs in the first inning to lead 10-0 after one frame, en route to the win. The visiting Blue Angels scored its lone run of game one in the fourth inning.
The Bloodhounds hammered out 13 hits in the opener.
Kaylee Fry led the way in the first game by going 3-for-3 with a double, a run and three runs batted in.
Jasmine Guerra added a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in a run, while
Lana Kovac was 2-for-2 with a run and a run driven in.
Marlin Rallas was 1-for-1 with a double, a run and two runs batted in.
Kovac picked up the game one win after pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits, while striking out six.
The College of New Rochelle had a pair of hits in game one, including one by Meghan King who was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Christine Biskup who was 1-for-2.
In the second game, John Jay scored two runs in the first inning, five more in the second and four more in the third. The Bloodhounds led 11-1 after the third inning as the College of New Rochelle scored a run in the top of the third.
Kalyssa Daley went 2-for-2 with three runs and a run batted in during the second game. Meanwhile Fry went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and three runs batted in. Overall, Fry went a combined 5-for-6 with two doubles, three runs and six runs batted in. Kovac added two hits in the nightcap, while Rallas and
Jennifer Varela had one hit each and a pair of runs batted in. Rallas' hit was a double.
The College of New Rochelle had a big second game from Meghan King who was 2-for-3 with a double, a homerun (deep blast to straightaway center field) and three runs batted in. The Blue Angels also got two hits each from Katy Baudendistel and Tanika Charles.
Kovac picked up another win in game two. She tossed five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out nine.
John Jay is back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against conference foe the College of Staten Island on Randall's Island Field #16 at noon.
