BELLEROSE, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team fell behind early, before a late surge fell just short in a 7-6 non-conference loss to Lehman College on Sunday afternoon at Padavan Preller Field.

The loss leaves the Bloodhounds at 2-18 this season, while Lehman improves its overall record to 12-12.

John Jay fell behind 7-1 after three and a half innings as Lehman scored one in the first, three in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth, while John Jay got one across in the bottom of the second.  The damage could have been worse for the Bloodhounds, but John Jay managed to get out of trouble leaving Lehman stranded with seven runners on base from innings two through four. The Lightning left the bases loaded in the second, before stranding two aboard in the third and fourth.

Meanwhile, John Jay ace starter Braylin Perez shook off early trouble. After allowing seven runners across in the first four innings, he kept Lehman scoreless through the next three innings, while not allowing the Lightning a hit. Lehman had 11 hits in the game, all of which came in the first four innings as the Lightning failed to strike in the final five frames. Relief pitcher Joe Jacobsen pitched the final two innings for the Bloodhounds and picked up where Perez left off keeping Lehman without a hit.

For the game, Perez pitched 7.0 innings and fanned 11 batters, while Jacobson pitched 2.0 innings and allowed no runs on no hits.

John Jay was still trailing 7-1 going into the seventh inning when the Bloodhounds began the late game threat. The Bloodhounds scored three in the seventh and twice more in the eighth to make the score 7-6. And the Bloodhounds had runners on second and third when the final out was made in the ninth.

In the seventh inning, the first three batters reached base safely for John Jay. Nick Gioia started the inning by hitting a single to right-center. Then Esteban Soler legged out an infield single to give the Bloodhounds runners on first and second with nobody out.  Then Luca Altamirano reached on a throwing error by Lehman allowing a run to score. But a second error by Lehman scored Soler to make the score 7-3.  Then with Altamirano on third after a stolen base, Dennis Lopez grounded out to score him from third.

In the eighth inning, John Jay got five hits, which led to another two runs to pull to within a run. An infield single by Altamirano scored Nico Rivera, who led off the inning with a single to right-center.  Then Soler came in to score when Lopez got a base hit to right field.

But John Jay could not get the timely hit in the final inning as the game ended with John Jay just a run shy of tying the score.

The Bloodhounds had 11 hits in the contest and at least one baserunner in eight of the nine innings. Gioia led the way by going 3-for-5 with a run and a run batted in, while Lopez, Rivera and Soler had two hits each.  Rivera and Soler both scored twice, while Lopez had a pair of runs batted in.

Lehman was led by Kevin Hernandez who was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and three runs batted in. Alberto German and Nicholas Morales both had a pair of hits, and each scored once and had one run batted in.

Starting pitcher Freddy Parra earned the win after going 5.0 innings allowing a run on three hits. Michael Liang picked up the save after pitching the final four outs, allowing no runs on two hits.
