RIVERDALE, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team lost a pair of two runs games in a doubleheader against the College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) on Tuesday afternoon. The Bloodhounds lost 2-0 in game one, and 9-7 in game two.
In the first game, John Jay left 10 runners on base as they failed to get a run across. The Bloodhounds had six hits in the opener, including two by
Jamie Lam.
CMSV scored a run in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Then the host Dolphins scored again in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-0 advantage.
John Jay threatened in the final inning as the Bloodhounds had runners on second and third with no one out. But a squeeze play attempt failed as a John Jay runner was put out at home. Then the final two batters struck out to end the game.
CMSV pitcher Kathleen Davis struck out 15 batters in game one en route to the win.
In game two, John Jay struck early and often and opened the game by taking a five run lead after one and a half innings. The Bloodhounds scored two runs in the first and three in the second to lead 5-0.
Ashley Kersting blasted a homerun down the leftfield line to put John Jay ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Then in the second inning
Leidy Lopera hit a solo homerun before
Kalyssa Daley hit a two-run shot.
But the Dolphins scored three runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-3. Then CMSV scored three more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead.
Then in the top of the fifth, John Jay went ahead again, via another long ball as
Kaylee Fry hit a two-run homer to put the Bloodhounds back up, 7-6.
But CMSV answered with a three run bottom of the fifth to take a 9-7 lead before holding the Bloodhounds at bay.
John Jay had 11 hits in game two, three of which came off the bat of Fry who was 3-for-4 , while Daley, Lopera and
Lana Kovac had two hits each.
