Softball Rolls Past Sarah Lawrence

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team cruised to a pair of non conference wins over Sarah Lawrence College on Thursday afternoon, winning 11-1 and 16-1. Both games were won via the five inning eight run rule.
 
The wins by John Jay snapped a six game losing streak and the Bloodhounds are now 9-14-1 overall this season.
 
In game one, John Jay scored five runs in the top of the first and two in the second to lead 7-0 after one and a half innings. The host Gryphons scored their lone run in the bottom of the second. Then John Jay added on three runs in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth to lead 11-1 and win by that score.
 
John Jay had 11 hits in game one and was led by Ashley Kersting who was 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and a run batted in. Meanwhile Jasmine Guerra and Kalyssa Daley had two hits each and both scored twice. One of Daley's hits was a homerun, a solo shot in the top of the second.
 
Sara McKenna picked up the game one win after allowing one run (unearned) on one hit, while striking out three.
 
In the second game, Sarah Lawrence scored a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead after the first inning. But the Bloodhounds exploded for five runs in the top of the second, before adding on seven in the third and four in the fourth to lead 16-1.
 
Jocelyn Ocasio led the way for the Bloodhounds going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs in the nightcap.  Kaylee Fry, Kersting and Daley all added two hits each. Fry belted her fifth homerun of the season, a two run shot during the seven run third, and had four runs batted in for the game. Meanwhile Kersting scored twice and drove in three, while Daley scored twice and drove in two.
 
McKenna picked up another win after allowing one run on two hits and striking out six.
 
John Jay returns to action on Friday for a home doubleheader against conference foe Hunter College on Randall's Island at 3 p.m.
