RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team lost a pair of conference games on Tuesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were swept in a doubleheader by Baruch College. John Jay lost 7-0 in game one, before falling 8-3 in game two.
With the results, John Jay is now 2-6 (2-4 CUNYAC) this season, while Baruch improves its record to 3-6 (2-0 CUNYAC).
In the first game,
Kaylee Fry accounted for John Jay's only hit, a line drive just over first base down the right field line. The hit came to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The only other base runner for John Jay was a walk by
Lana Kovac to start the seventh inning.
Baruch had a well-pitched game by game one starter Nicole Flint. She went the distance, allowing no runs on one hit, while walking one and striking out nine to earn the win.
The Bearcats had 12 hits in the first game, including three from designated player Courtney White who was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Chelsea DeGuzman was 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs and two runs batted in in the first game.
Baruch scored four runs in the top of the first, then three more in the fourth to round out the scoring.
In game two, Baruch scored three runs in the first to establish a lead early. The Bearcats then scored four more runs in the top of the fourth to lead 7-0 after three and a half innings.
But John Jay scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to break the shutout bid.
Marlin Rallas, who was 1-for-3 with a run batted in, ripped a two out single into left field to score
Leeann Rosa, who led off the inning with a walk.
Baruch scored another run in the top of the fifth to go back ahead by seven runs, but the Bloodhounds struck again with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Kalyssa Daley placed a sacrifice bunt to score
Sara McKenna. Then in the final inning, John Jay struck again when
Ashley Kersting scored from third on a sacrifice fly by McKenna.
The Bloodhounds had eight hits in game two, including two each by Kersting and Kovac. Kersting was 2-for-3 with a run, while Kovac was 2-for-4.
Baruch had a three hit performance by Megan Ruiz who was 3-for-5 with two runs and two runs batted in. Toniann Donde was 2-for-4 with two runs and a run batted in, while Flint went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a run batted in.
