NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team split a critical doubleheader with the City College of New York on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds lost 3-2 in game one, before winning 10-5 in the second game to get on the inside track to the conference playoffs on Saturday afternoon.

The split gives John Jay two conference wins this season as the Bloodhounds are now 2-7 in City University of New York Athletic Conference play. CCNY ends its conference schedule with a 2-10 record. John Jay, with one more game against Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday, followed by a doubleheader against Yeshiva University on May 3, controls its own destiny for the final playoff spot for the CUNYAC / MCU baseball championship at MCU Park next month.

In Saturday's first game, Braylin Perez pitched well, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out 11. But the run support given to him was just short. John Jay got a two out triple in the top of the seventh inning by Steven Donato to get the tying run 90 feet away, but CCNY closer Brian Collado recorded the final out. Prior to that, CCNY starter, Andrew Mulvey, pitched 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits, while striking out three.

The host Beavers took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, before John Jay got its lone two runs of game one in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead at the time. Billy Moran hit a single to drive in Ronald Barillas and Luca Altamirano to put the Bloodounds ahead.

CCNY scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it, before getting another run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and win the game, forcing John Jay to a practical must win in game two to keep playoff hopes under its control.

In game two, John Jay scored double figures in runs for the first time this season en route to salvaging the split with the Beavers, who fell to 4-23 after losing game two.

John Jay took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, before CCNY countered with a run of its own to tie it. But the Bloodhounds broke the game open with five runs in the second to take the lead for good. CCNY scored again in the bottom of the second, before the Bloodhounds got two more in the third to lead 8-2 after two and a half innings.

John Jay laced 15 hits in the nightcap, and got three hits each from Billy Moran and Esteban Soler. Moran had a double and scored three times, while Soler had two runs and two runs batted in.  Meanwhile Nico Rivera was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs batted in, while Ronald Barillas was 1-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Trevor Johnson picked up the game two win after going the distance and allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts.

The two will play a single non conference game on Sunday at 8 a.m. at Padavan Preller Field.
