BELLEROSE, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team picked up a win on Sunday morning as the Bloodhounds beat the City College of New York 8-4 in a non-conference game at Padavan Preller Field.
The win improves the Bloodhounds to 4-21 overall this season, while CCNY falls to 4-24.
Freshman pitcher
Chris Cracchiolo earned his first career win in the contest after pitching seven strong innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out two. Teammate
Joe Jacobsen completed the win by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
With the bat,
Dennis Lopez ripped three singles and went 3-for-4 with two runs and a run batted in to lead the Bloodhound attack. John Jay had seven hits total, as
Ronald Barillas,
Steven Donato,
Erik Pratz and
Nick Gioia had one hit each.
The Bloodhounds made the most of CCNY fielding miscues as the visiting Beavers tallied eight errors, leading to five John Jay runs to be unearned.
John Jay also had its running shoes on for the brisk Sunday morning start that began at 8:11 a.m. ET as the Bloodhounds registered 11 stolen bases. Lopez and Barillas had three stolen bases each, while Pratz and
Luca Altamirano both had two. Soler also had a stolen base in the contest.
The Bloodhounds never trailed in the game. They scored two runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-0. CCNY tied the score with two runs in the top of the second. But John Jay got three runs across in the bottom of the second to lead 5-2 after two innings. John Jay then got two more in the fourth to give itself a 7-2 advantage as the Bloodhounds were well on their way to victory.
CCNY had nine hits in the contest, including three from Matt Sola-Baker who was 3-for-4 with a run, a double and a run batted in.
John Jay is back in action on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Bard College at Gruner Field in Kingston, N.Y. at 6 p.m.
