Softball Goes Unbeaten against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in Doubleheader

RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team went unbeaten on Wednesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds beat St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader before drawing to a 3-3 tie in the second game, which was called after the sixth inning due to darkness.
 
John Jay is now 3-6-1 overall, while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn is now 5-8-1.
 
In the first game, the Bloodhounds pounded out nine hits and were led by Jasmine Guerra who was 2-for-3 with two runs, while seven other players had one hit each.
 
John Jay took a 1-0 lead after a run in the bottom of the first inning. Ashley Kersting hit a single to left field to score Guerra, who led off the bottom half of the frame with a seeing eye single.
 
The visiting Bears scored a run in the top of the second to tie the score. But John Jay struck again in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs. Guerra got her second hit of the game with a two out single, but an error by the Bears defense allowed Marlin Rallas to score. Then moments later, Guerra scored after Kalyssa Daley reached on another St. Joseph's error.  St. Joseph's made five errors, which led to three unearned runs by John Jay.
 
In the fourth inning, the Bloodhounds got another pair of runs. Jennifer Varela, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored from second after a successful sacrifice bunt attempt by Jamie Lam resulted in a St. Joseph's throwing error. Then the Bloodhounds made the Bears pay as Daley ripped a single to score Lam.
 
John Jay took the 5-1 lead into the seventh inning before the Bears edged closer with two runs. But John Jay's lead proved too much to overcome as the Bloodhounds earned the win.
 
St. Joseph's had four hits in game one, including two each by Laura Innocente who was 2-for-3 with a run and a run batted in, while Mabel Vargas was 2-for-2 with a triple and a pair of runs.
 
Sara McKenna picked up the game one win after pitching seven innings and allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out six.
 
In the second game, the Bears scored a run in the top of the first to take the early lead. Christine Marino recorded a two-out solo homerun to put the Bears up 1-0.
 
John Jay did not find its groove until the fourth inning as game two starting pitcher Jackie Perillo held the Bloodhounds without a hit through the first three innings.
 
John Jay scored a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. First Daley got John Jay its first hit in game two with a double to right field. Then pinch runner Jocelyn Ocasio scored from third on a single by Kovac. Then a bases loaded walk by McKenna forced in Kersting who singled earlier in the inning.
 
St. Joseph's came back to tie the score when Innocente singled home Megan Moran who led off the inning by reaching on a three-base error. Then in the next inning, the Bears scored again to go ahead 3-2 on an RBI ground out by Morgan Summers scored Vargas.
 
John Jay scored in the bottom of the sixth to tie it when a two-out single by Varela scored Kovac.
 
The seventh inning of the evenly matched contest failed to commence as dusk settled in leaving the score tied after six innings.
 
McKenna started the second game and pitched the first three innings. She allowed a run on two hits and struck out one. Kovac pitched the latter three innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit.
 
John Jay is back in action on Saturday for a contest against conference foe York College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
