Box Score 2 Bellerose, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team earned a pair of conference wins on Saturday afternoon as the Bloodhounds beat York College in both games of a doubleheader. The Bloodhounds won the first game, 7-4, before winning game two, 4-3.
The wins up John Jay's record to 5-6-1 (4-4 CUNYAC), while York College is now 3-12 (0-4 CUNYAC).
In game one, John Jay built a 7-0 lead after five and a half innings before York cut into the lead late to give a mild scare late. The Bloodhounds scored a run in the top of the second and another in the top of the third to lead 2-0 after three innings. John Jay scored another in the fifth, then four in the sixth to lead 7-0.
York scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, then another pair in the bottom of the seventh to make the game close before it ended.
John Jay had 11 hits in the first game, including two each by
Ashley Kersting,
Kaylee Fry,
Lana Kovac and
Jamie Lam. Lam and Kersting had two runs batted in each, while
Kalyssa Daley was 1-for-2 with a triple, a run and a run batted in.
In game two, John Jay established a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, when York scored all three of its runs to make the game close. The game ended with York leaving the tying run on third base. Thessaly Belizario ripped a two out triple to clear the bases and leave York within a run of tying it. But the final batter struck out as John Jay completed the sweep.
In game two, John Jay scored a run in the top of the first and top of the fifth to lead 2-0 after five innings. Then another pair of runs in the sixth by the Bloodhounds gave John Jay a 4-0 lead.
Marlin Rallas was the lone Bloodhound to have more than one hit for John Jay as she had two. Meanwhile Kersting, Lam and
Jennifer Varela had a hit and run batted in each.
John Jay's next game is Tuesday at Randall's Island against the College of Mt. St. Mary at 3 p.m.
