RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y.— The John Jay softball team lost a pair of games to the College of Mt. St. Mary, losing the first game 7-5 before falling in the nightcap 15-2 on a bright, warm 80 degree day on Randall's Island Tuesday afternoon.

With the losses, John Jay is now 5-8-1 overall this season, while Mt. St. Mary's is now 13-9 this season.

In the first game, John Jay was led by Ashley Kersting and Kalyssa Daley with a pair of hits each, while Kersting added a run batted in. Kaylee Fry was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Lana Kovac was 1-for-4 with a double and a run.

The visiting Blue Knights broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with three runs. Mt. St. Mary's added two more in the next inning to lead 5-0 after three and a half innings.

But the game was far from over as John Jay sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game with a five run fifth inning. John Jay started the scoring by capitalizing on a Mt. St. Mary's miscue when Kovac scored from second after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Sara McKenna went haywire for the Blue Knights as the Mt. St. Mary's third baseman threw the ball away. Later McKenna came in to score on a single to right field by Jasmine Guerra. Then Jennifer Varela scored on a single by Kersting.  John Jay completed the big inning with a two run single by Fry that scored Guerra and Jamie Lam.

But the Blue Knights answered in the top of the fifth to retake the lead, and did so with one swing of the bat. Stephanie Karcher, who was 2-for-3 in game one, blasted a homerun well over the left field fence, clearing it by about 50 feet, to give Mt. St. Mary's a 6-5 lead.

The Blue Knights added another run in the top of the seventh to take a two run lead before winning by that margin.

Mt. St. Mary's had 11 hits in the opener including Karcher's two, and two each by Kate Zubicki, Erin Moran and Brianne Germain.

McKenna suffered the game one loss for the Bloodhounds after tossing seven innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits and striking out three.

In game two, the Blue Knights scored a run in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. But Mt. St. Mary's tacked on 10 in the top of the third to take a 15-0 lead after two and a half innings of play.

John Jay scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to edge closer. First, Marlin Rallas hit a single to score Kersting. Then a fielder's choice with the bases loaded by Varela scored Kovac from third base.

Kersting led the way for the Bloodhounds with two hits in game two, while Fry, Kovac and Rallas had one each.

Mt St. Mary's had 16 hits in the second game, including two each by seven different players. Kate Zubicki had two doubles and four runs batted in in game two, while Ashley Schirripa had a double, three runs and four runs batted in.

John Jay is back in action on Thursday for a doubleheader against the College of New Rochelle at 4 p.m. on Randall's Island.
