LANGHORNE, Pa.— The John Jay baseball team was defeated on the road at Cairn University 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon.
John Jay pounded out 10 hits in the contest, and the Bloodhounds were led by
Ronald Barillas who was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Meanwhile
Esteban Soler and
Billy Moran had a pair of hits each.
Nico Rivera went 1-for-2 with a double and a run batted in.
The Bloodhounds scored two runs in the top of the first to lead 2-0 early. But the host Highlanders scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to tie the score. John Jay retook the lead after a run in the top of the sixth to lead 3-2. But Cairn answered in the bottom half with two more runs to take a 4-3 advantage.
Then the Highlanders scored twice more in the seventh inning to pull ahead 6-3 after seven innings.
But John Jay did not go quietly as the Bloodhounds scored two in the top of the ninth to pull to within a run before the final out was made. The Highlanders made four errors in the game, two of which came in the ninth inning, leading to both of John Jay's runs to be unearned. John Jay had runners on first and second when the game ended.
Cairn was led by Kyle Parisi who was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run batted in. Austin Arseneau and Kenneth Searle added two hits and two runs batted in each.
Joe Jacobsen suffered the loss in relief for John Jay. He pitched two innings and allowed four runs on three hits. Rivera started the game and allowed no runs on two hits.
Chris Cracchiolo pitched the final three innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
The Highlanders used five pitchers in the contest, and Michael DeLuca picked up the win in relief. Teammate Caleb Lang pitched the final inning to earn the save.
John Jay returns to action on Friday for a critical doubleheader against conference foe Yeshiva University with playoff implications on the line. The first game is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at South Field on the campus of Lehman College.
