BRONX, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team got a pair of masterfully pitched games by
Braylin Perez and
David Schildwachter as the Bloodhounds swept a doubleheader from Yeshiva University on Friday morning, beating the Macabees 8-0 in game one and 7-1 in game two.
With the wins, John Jay improved to 8-27 overall this season, and the Bloodhounds end their 2013 conference regular season schedule with a 4-8 mark. With the win in game one, John Jay clinched the final playoff spot in the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) / MCU baseball championship next week. The Bloodhounds will be the No. 4 seed and take on top seeded College of Staten Island in the first game on Monday at 1 p.m. at MCU Park in Brooklyn.
In the game one win, Perez dazzled, striking out a season-high 15 batters through the first six innings en route to the complete game shutout. He struck out each Yeshiva batter at least once during the game, and fanned eight Macabees in a row during one stretch. He struck out the side in the second and third innings, and fanned all three outs during the sixth inning.
He had a perfect game through the first four and one third innings, and allowed four hits in the game and walked just one.
Meanwhile, with the bats, the Bloodhounds hammered out 10 hits en route to supplying more than enough run support for Perez. John Jay took the lead in the bottom of the first with a run, before adding two in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one in the sixth to lead 8-0.
Dennis Lopez led the way by going 4-for-4, with a double, a run and three runs batted in.
Luca Altamirano was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, while
Ronald Barillas and
Nico Rivera both doubled in the win.
Jake Frankel, Adam Volk, Yaniv Lautman and Gabe Rudansky had one hit each for Yeshiva in the first game.
In game two, Schildwachter had his first career start and pitched solidly. He went the distance and allowed one run on three hits, while striking out four.
But while Schildwachter was working well, Yeshiva matched stride,s and the game was scoreless after three innings. The Macabees scored the first run of the game on a double steal attempt that got Elisha Rudolph home from third base.
John Jay, who had just one infield single through four innings came alive and plated a combined seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings. The Bloodhounds scored three in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead after five, then got four more the next inning to lead 7-1 after six innings.
Barillas went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in in game two, while Lopez was 1-for-3 with two runs and two runs batted in.
Yeshiva had one hit each from Volk, Lautman and Elie Baratz.
Before Monday's playoff game, John Jay is back in action on Saturday for a game at Utica College at 12 p.m.
