BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The John Jay baseball team was eliminated from playoff competition on Tuesday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by Lehman College, 2-1, in the first elimination game of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference / MCU baseball championship at MCU Park.
The game was a pitcher's duel from the outset and all runs were scored in the third inning.
The Bloodhounds, who are the No. 4 seed, took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the frame when
Dennis Lopez laced a single that scored
Nick Gioia who led off with an infield single.
The Lightning came back with a pair of runs in the bottom half. First a ground out by Socrates Peralta scored Onix Mejia. Then the next batter, Michael Liang grounded out to score Waldo Acosta to put Lehman ahead.
The two runs proved to be just enough as neither team scored the rest of the way.
John Jay had five hits and was led by
Nick Gioia and
Ronald Barillas with two hits each. Lopez got the other hit for the Bloodhounds.
Braylin Perez pitched well. He allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out six over eight innings.
Freddy Parra picked up the win for Lehman after going seven innings and allowing one run (none earned) on four hits. Liang picked up the save after pitching the final two innings and allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.
