John Jay had the first scoring chance of the game when sophomore
Natalie Cervantes broke through Briarcliffe's defense for a breakaway but Bulldogs goalie, Laura Vasquez, made a great save to keep the score tied at 0. At the end of the first half, the statistics were relatively even with both the Bloodhounds and Bulldogs collecting seven shots apiece.
John Jay started the second half firing shots at all angles against Vasquez. The Bloodhounds were able to capitalize in the 51st minute when junior
Stephannie Rengifo made a pass to freshman
Jessica Jean, who buried it in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Approximately six minutes later, a Bulldogs defender was ruled for a foul a few feet outside the box. Sophomore
Katelyn Davis took the kick and blasted it by the goalie to give John Jay an insurance goal.
Sophomore
Andrea Antoni recorded the shutout with six saves. Jean finished with a team-high five shots, with four on goal. The Bulldogs were led by Crystal Dunn, who registered a game-high seven shots, including three on net. Vasquez finished with seven saves.
"To come into this game with a lot of injuries and get two points, the team is absolutely delighted," head coach
Kamal Haruna said. "We had a lot of good chances and deserved to win today's game. Our defense was in excellent shape throughout the game."
The Bloodhounds play one more home game on Saturday, September 21 at 12:00pm at Randall's Island before they hit the road for a three-game road trip.
