John Jay got off to an early start two minutes into the match when senior
Besian Shala blew by the Dolphins defense for a breakaway. The forward was able to kick it by the Mount Saint Vincent's goalkeeper to give John Jay an early 1-0 lead. The rest of the half remained scoreless with senior goalkeeper Steven Marino making two saves. Shala had a great opportunity late in the half to give him his second goal of the game but the ball rang off the crossbar. In the 44th minute, a John Jay player was given a red card, which changed the complexion for the remainder of the game. The Dolphins had six shots in the half while the Bloodhounds finished with five.
With John Jay shorthanded the remainder of the game, the team began focusing more on their defense. The midfielders and defenders constantly cleared the zone to limit any Dolphins chances. The Bloodhounds played great defense but the Dolphins were finally able to capitalize when Matthew Samaan scored in the 87th minute to tie the game.
In overtime, Mount Saint Vincent continued their constant pressure but the Bloodhounds were able to fight off any scoring opportunities. However, in the 99th minute, Jorge Chavez took a shot from the middle of the field that took a lucky bounce over sophomore
Andrew Berman's head and was tipped in by Kevin Jardines for the game-winning goal.
"We showed great resolve today going a man down," head coach Nate Bell said. "We are starting to look like we understand what it means to be a team."
Berman finished with seven saves on the night and Shala had a team-high three shots on goal.
