Men's Soccer Shuts Out CCNY for First Win of Season

9/25/2013 12:00:00 AM

Box Score The men's soccer team shutout the Beavers of CCNY, 1-0, on Wednesday evening at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds are no longer winless as they improve to 1-8-1 (1-1 in CUNYAC) on the season while the Beavers fall to 1-6-1 (1-1 in CUNYAC).

For much of the first half, the stats were relatively even with the Bloodhounds recording five shots and the Beavers six. Both defenses limited the offense as there were a total of four shots on goal. However, John Jay caught a break when freshman Omer Abdella made a long pass to junior Pablo Rojas who squeaked it by CCNY's goalkeeper. This was Rojas' first collegiate goal of his career. Going into the second half, the Bloodhounds led 1-0.

The second half was much like the first with John Jay and CCNY registering six and five shots, respectively. Fortunately, John Jay was able to hold on to the lead thanks to a strong defensive presence as well as the play of junior goalkeeper Vitecha Kochaon. He finished with three saves and recorded his first shutout of the season.

"We are happy to get our first win of the season," first-year head coach Nathan Bell said. "We still have a long season ahead of ourselves."

Abdella finished with a team-high four shots. CCNY was led by Samuel Nkama, who recorded a team-high four shots as well. Daniel Goncalves made four saves on the night.

The Bloodhounds will close out their home stand on Saturday, September 28 with a match against CUNYAC opponent York College. The match is scheduled to start at 12:00pm.
