Women's Basketball Almost Pulls Off Upset Against CSI

The women's basketball team fell to the College of Staten Island, 54-47, on Saturday afternoon at the Doghouse. With the loss, the Bloodhounds drop to 7-14 overall and 5-8 in CUNYAC. The Dolphins improve to 18-4 on the season and 13-1 in the conference. 

Before tipoff, the John Jay Athletics Department and women's basketball team honored three seniors; Jamecia Forsythe, Tyana Hale, and Sandy Requeno

The Bloodhounds got off to an early 5-0 lead with senior Forsythe hitting two layups. The Dolphins went onto score the next eight points to give them their first lead of the contest. John Jay tied it at eight apiece after junior Hale converted on a three-point play. 

With 10:54 remaining in the half, sophomore Tamara Jones made a layup and Forsythe hit a jumper to give the Bloodhounds a 15-11 lead. Thirty seconds later, CSI regained the lead as the Dolphins went on an 8-0 run. 

The Bloodhounds responded and tied the game on a three-pointer by sophomore Terri Chu and a free-throw by Forsythe. Junior Amanda Jimenez gave John Jay a 21-19 lead after making two free-throws with under six minutes left in the half. The Dolphins then went on a 7-0 run but junior Sherrice Marshall tied the game at 26 heading into the second half. 

John Jay started the second half registering the first six points with sophomore Amber Villegas hitting back-to-back shots. With just over 12 minutes remaining, the Dolphins tied the game at 36 apiece. The next four minutes went back and forth with both teams exchanging leads. 

With CSI leading 41-40, the Dolphins went on an 8-0 run to increase their lead to nine. John Jay trimmed the lead to four but the visitors would take the conference game by a score of 54-47. 

Forsythe recorded a double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds, one block and one steal. Chu scored 10 points and Marshall registered a game-high 15 rebounds. Jones added eight points, 11 rebounds, and team-high two blocks off the bench. Villegas had a team-high two assists and Jimenez picked up a game-high five steals. 

The Bloodhounds will hit the road on Monday, February 10 for a non-conference match at Farmingdale State College at 6pm.
