The mixed rifle team won its 10th MAC championship this past weekend in New London, CT on the campus of the United States Coast Guard Academy. The team defeated SUNY Maritime in air rifle, 2223-2152, but lost to the University of the Sciences (women) in smallbore, 2022-1992. The team's 2223 points in air rifle was a season-high.
The rifle team has now tied baseball for most conference championships at John Jay College with 10. The team was on the verge of setting a school record but fell short in smallbore.
On the air rifle side, the Bloodhounds were led by
Ronald Kopec. The freshman shot a 566 (95, 98, 92, 91, 94, 96) followed by senior
Elisa Dunn, who recorded a career-high 562 (96, 92, 91, 91, 94, 98). Senior
David Vegvari finished with a score of 553 (92, 93, 92, 91, 94, 91) and sophomore
Connie Villon added a 542 (95, 83, 89, 93, 88, 94).
In smallbore, Kopec was the Bloodhounds top shooter once again. The Northvale, NJ native registered a score of 535 (89, 89, 93, 94, 84, 86). Vegvari finished in second with a 495 (85, 75, 92, 88, 85, 70) followed by Dunn with a 486 (75, 83, 91, 86, 76, 75). Rounding out the top four was sophomore
Matthew Pascual, recording a 467 (82, 86, 91, 90, 53, 74).
The Bloodhounds finish the season with an air rifle record of 10-4 and smallbore record of 7-8.
