The baseball team lost a doubleheader, 9-4 and 17-3, to the US Merchant Marine Academy on Friday afternoon at St. Joseph's College - Long Island. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in CUNYAC. The Mariners improve to 5-2 on the season.Â
In game one, senior pitcher
Nico Rivera cruised through the first three innings. With no score in the bottom of the fourth, the Merchant Marine Academy scored the first run of the game on a passed ball. The Bloodhounds responded by tying the game on two hit-by-pitch's and an RBI groundout by senior
Pedro Acosta.Â
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Mariners scored six runs on five hits to give them a 7-1 lead. John Jay would not go down without a fight. In the top half of the sixth inning, junior
Nestor Amarante doubled in Rivera on an RBI double to left center. The Bloodhounds added another two runs on throwing errors.Â
The Merchant Marine Academy tacked on an additional two runs in the bottom of the sixth. They would go on to win game one, 9-4.Â
Rivera threw 4.1 innings and gave up seven hits, seven runs (six earned), one walk, and struck out two. Amarante recorded two hits and Rivera had the other one. Senior
Ronald Barillas and sophomore
Esteban Soler had a stolen base each.
Mariners' Kyle Clausen picked up the victory, throwing six innings and allowing three hits, four runs (two earned), one walk and struck out four. Warren Hartmann went 3-for-4 with four RBI's.Â
In game two, the Mariners jumped out to an early lead after scoring five runs in the first inning. John Jay cut the deficit to three in the top of the second. Soler singled in juniors
Erik Pratz and
Shaun Gutkin with a two-out two-run single to center field.
However, Merchant Marine Academy matched John Jay's two runs by scoring two of their own. In the top of the third, Gutkin drove home senior
Corry Harper on an RBI single to centerfield.Â
Unfortunately for the Bloodhounds, the Mariners scored eight runs in the next two innings to lead, 15-3. They would go on to take the second game and doubleheader, 17-3.Â
Harper got the start for the Bloodhounds and pitched three innings, giving up eight hits, nine runs (six earned), and struck out four. JuniorÂ
Alex Depasquale came in relief and threw 1.1 shutout innings. Harper, Amarante, Gutkin, and Soler picked up John Jay's hits. Barillas and Soler both recorded their second stolen base of the day.Â
Mariners' Hartmann, Danny Collins, and Cameron Stadele had 3 RBI's each. Nathan Slusarczyk came away with the victory after throwing five innings.Â
The Bloodhounds will travel to Baseball Heaven for a home game on Sunday, March 16 for a doubleheader against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn.Â
