Baseball Loses Two Against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn

The baseball team fell in a doubleheader, 8-4 and 11-5, to St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-7 overall and 0-1 in CUNYAC. The Bears improve to 3-4 on the season.

In game one, John Jay got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Ronald Barillas led off with a single and stole second. Junior Nestor Amarante drove him in on an RBI single. The next batter, junior Shaun Gutkin, singled in senior Nico Rivera who walked in the inning to give the Bloodhounds an early 2-0 lead.

Freshman Michael Wang got the start for John Jay and cruised through the first two innings. In the top of the third, the Bears scored five runs on four straight hits to take a 5-2 lead.

St. Joseph's added two insurance runs in the 5th and 7th innings to increase their lead to five. In the Bloodhounds final at bat, Rivera recorded an RBI ground out and Amarante singled in Barillas on an RBI single. John Jay would go on to lose, 8-4.

Barillas finished the game with a team-high three hits, two runs, and one stolen base. Amarante went 2-for-3 with two RBI's and sophomore Nick Gioia picked up two hits. Wang threw a complete game for John Jay.

The Bears were led by Vinny Rosi, who collected three hits, two runs and an RBI. Thomas McKenna finished with two RBI's. Rosario DiLorenzo picked up the win after throwing a complete game. He allowed eight hits, four runs, five walks, and struck out six.

In game two, St. Joseph's College scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. They added two runs each in the second, third, and fourth innings to lead 7-0. The Bloodhounds broke the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Esteban Soler walked. He stole second and third and scored on an RBI single by Gioia.

The Bears responded by scoring three in the top of the 7th to lead 11-1. In John Jay's final frame, Soler picked up an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Barillas then hit a bases clearing double to cut the deficit to six. Unfortunately, the Bloodhounds would not score the rest of the inning. 

Barillas, Gioia, and Gutkin were the only Bloodhounds to record hits. Barillas had 3 RBI's and Soler registered two stolen bases. Freshman Charles Mendes tossed six innings, allowing six hits, eight runs (five earned), seven walks, and struck out three.

St. Joseph's Joe Mendez finished 3-for-5 with three RBI's. Chris Cutrone recorded the win, throwing 6 innings and allowing two hits and one run.

The Bloodhounds will travel to Yeshiva University for a conference game on Tuesday, March 18, at 8pm.
