Baseball Pounds Out 16 Runs and 19 Hits to Record First Win of the Season

Box Score The baseball team defeated Yeshiva University, 16-3, on Tuesday night in Bronx, NY. The Bloodhounds pick up their first win of the season and the Maccabees fall to 0-8 on the season. 

John Jay got started in the first inning as senior Nico Rivera drove home senior Ronald Barillas with a sacrifice fly. In the next inning, Barillas, sophomore Nick Gioia, and junior Nestor Amarante recorded RBI's as John Jay led 6-0 after two. 

The visitors tacked on two more runs in the third inning, capped off by an RBI single by Barillas. In the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, the Bloodhounds scored a run in each inning and led 11-2 heading into the 8th inning. 

In the top half of the 8th, sophomore Joe Jacobsen, Barillas, and Rivera all recorded RBI's as the Bloodhounds put a five spot in the inning. John Jay would go on to pick up their first victory of the season, 16-3.

Barillas led the way, going 4-for-6 with three RBI's, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Gioia, Amarante, Rivera, and Corry Harper had a combined nine hits and six RBI's. Freshman RJ Davila recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI and Jacobsen registered his first collegiate RBI. Sophomore Esteban Soler, junior Shaun Gutkin, and Davila swiped five, three, and three bases, respectively.  On the night, John Jay recorded 19 hits and 15 stolen bases. 

On the mound, Rivera was dominant as the Brooklyn native tossed a complete game, allowing three hits, three runs (none earned), one walk and struck out a season-high nine Maccabees. 

The Bloodhounds will play a home game on Wednesday, March 19 against Mount Saint Vincent at 4:00pm at Randall's Island.
