Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 New York, NY – Despite the frigid temperature for Tuesday's double header at Randall's Island, the softball team came out with a 6-4 win in game two after a nail-biting game one loss, 17-15 against New Jersey City University. The Bloodhounds improve to 1-3 overall, while the Gothic Knights drop to 2-8 on the season.

NJCU 17, John Jay 15
In game one, the Bloodhounds, down by 16 runs going into the third inning, pulled together a 12 hit, 15 run rally that brought them within two runs, but came up short in the bottom of the 7th inning. In the 2 hour 40 minute contest, both teams combined for 32 runs and 27 hits. The Gothic Knights, led by senior Casey Perez (2-5) and freshman Yaquelin Iglesias (3-5) scored 16 runs in the first three frames, allowing for John Jay to score a single run going into the third inning.

In the third inning, with the top of the lineup coming up, the Bloodhounds began what was probably the biggest rally on record for the team. Junior catcher Jennifer Varela (2-4, 4 RBIs) got things going when she belted a grand slam over the left field fence, knocking in four runs for the Bloodhounds. Fellow teammate freshman outfielder Danielle Minaya (2-4, 4 RBIs) also lifted a three-run homerun to left field in the next inning to keep the rally going. The Bloodhounds would eventually come up short in the bottom of the 7th inning, leaving two runners stranded, after back-to-back singles by freshman shortstop Jennifer Pace and senior third basemen Marlin Rallas.

Senior center fielder Lana Kovac was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, third baseman Marlin Rallas scored twice, going 2-for-4 in the game. Senior second baseman Kalyssa Daley went 1-2, scored three times and had two RBIs and first baseman Jessica Zaccari scored twice.

John Jay 7, NJCU 3 (5 innings)
In game two of the nightcap, John Jay scored early to take a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the game was called due to darkness.

NJCU took the lead 1-0 in the first inning after Perez and Iglesias reached base and catcher Marissa Bariso knocked in an RBI on a groundout. John Jay would soon take the lead in the bottom of the inning after two passed balls.

After a few fielding mishaps by the Gothic Knights, the Bloodhounds would tack on five more runs in the bottom of the second inning when Kovac laced a one-out, bases-loaded two-run single.  The Bloodhound defense kept the NJCU offense at a standstill in the next two innings, stranding six runners in the next two innings. John Jay added two more runs in the fifth, before the game was called for darkness.

Junior pitcher Sara McKenna (1-2) picked up the win going five innings giving up three runs on seven hits. Pace went 1-3 in the nightcap with an RBI and a run score and Rallas also went 1-3 with a run scored.

The Bloodhounds are back on the field tomorrow for a conference double header in Staten Island against CSI at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
