The baseball team fell to Maritime College, 3-2 and 10-8, on Sunday afternoon in Throggs Neck, NY. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-10 on the season. The Privateers improve to 4-9 overall.
Game one featured a pitching duel between freshman
Michael Wang and Maritime's Ryan Alsdorf. The Privateers scored in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Paul Woodburn to give them an early 1-0 lead. Maritime added a run in the third and fifth innings on an RBI groundout and an RBI single, respectively.Â
The Bloodhounds' best chance of tying the game came in the last inning as freshman
R.J. Davila singled with one out. Junior
Erik Pratz followed with a single to create first and second. Sophomore
Esteban Soler moved the runners over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Senior
Ronald Barillas then reached on an error, which scored two, to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, Alsdorf was able to retire the next batter to collect his second win of the season.Â
Wang went the distance, allowing 11 hits, three runs, and walked one. Pratz finished the day, going 3-for-3, with a run scored. Junior
Nestor Amarante collected two hits.Â
Alsdorf threw a complete game, allowing six hits, two runs (none earned), one walk, and struck out 11. Matthew Sollin went 4-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base.Â
In game two, the Privateers jumped out to an early lead after scoring three in the second inning on four hits. They added two more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to five.Â
However, the Bloodhounds would respond. With second and third and two outs, Amarante singled in one run and senior
Nico Rivera doubled in another. Two batter's later, senior
Corry Harper laced a two-run single to put the Bloodhounds down one. Davila then drove home sophomore
Shaun Gutkin and Harper to give John Jay its first lead of the day, 6-5. Davila later scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to two.Â
Maritime chipped away at the lead and tied the game in the top of the fifth. Heading into the seventh inning, the score was tied, 8-8. In the top of the seventh and runners on second and third with two outs, Maritime's leadoff hitter Nick Galli hit a two-run double down the left field line to give the visitors a 10-8 lead.Â
In the bottom half of the inning, Harper doubled but was stranded at second as the Bloodhounds could not find a way to force extra innings.Â
Freshman
Charles Mendes got the start for John Jay and threw five innings. Harper pitched in relief and got credited with the loss. Barillas, Rivera, and Harper picked up two hits each. Davila finished the game going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI's and one stolen base. Barillas and Soler swiped one base each.Â
Maritime's Galli went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI's. James Very was the fourth pitcher for the Privateer's and recorded his first win of the season.
The Bloodhounds play a single game on Wednesday, March 26, at 4:00pm against Mount St. Mary College.
