Box Score 2 The baseball team swept Lehman College, 7-4 and 5-4 (8 innings), on Saturday afternoon in Bronx, NY. The Bloodhound pick up their first two conference wins of the season and improve to 2-1 in CUNYAC and 3-13 overall. The Lightning drop to 0-4 in the conference and 1-14 overall.
The Bloodhounds opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore
Esteban Soler walked and stole second base. A few pitches later, Soler stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to give the Bloodhounds an early 1-0 lead. The next batter was junior
Nestor Amarante and he smoked a double to left center. Senior
Corry Harper followed with his first collegiate homerun down the left field line to give the Bloodhounds a 3-0 lead.
The Lightning trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the third inning when Jaime Maldanado hit a two-run homer. An inning later, freshman
Brian Cabral recorded his first collegiate homerun to increase the lead to 4-2. John Jay added three insurance runs on an RBI ground out by Soler, a sac-fly from senior
Nico Rivera, and an RBI double by junior
Shaun Gutkin.
Lehman scored two runs in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as the Bloodhounds would go on to win their first conference game of the season by a score of 7-4.
Rivera threw a complete game, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned), two walks, and struck out two. Harper finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a stolen base. Soler went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, one RBI, and one run scored.
Just like game one, John Jay took the first lead when Amarante doubled in senior
Ronald Barillas. In the bottom of the second and Cabral at second base, sophomore
Joe Jacobsen recorded an RBI single to give John Jay a 2-0 lead.
The Lightning tied the game in the following frame on two hits and one error. Lehman took it's first lead of the day in the 4th inning and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to lead 4-2.
In the bottom of the seventh and one out, Barillas and Soler hit back-to-back singles. With Rivera up. both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Rivera then drove home Barillas on an RBI groundout and Soler advanced to third on the play. With John Jay trailing by one with two outs, Soler scored on a pass ball to tie the game at four.
Lehman would not score in the top of the eighth and the Bloodhounds were looking to win it on a walk-off. With two outs and sophomore Nich Gioia on first, freshman
R.J. Davila blooped a single into left field. Gioia would end up scoring the game-winning run on a throwing error to sweep the Lightning, 5-4.
Freshman
Michael Wang got the start and threw 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, and three runs (two earned). Sophomore
Matthew Quirindongo came up big for the Bloodhounds when the Brooklyn native tossed three innings in relief and gave up no hits. Harper would end up picking up the win in relief to improve his record to 1-3.
Davila finished the game going 2-for-3. Barillas registered a hit, two runs, and one stolen base. Jacobsen, Amarante, and Rivera picked up RBI's.
The Bloodhounds will head back to Lehman College for a nonconference game on Sunday, April 6, at 12:00pm.
