Softball Swept in Doubleheader by Wilkes

Edwardsville, PA – The John Jay softball team fell to Wilkes University in a pair of non-conference games on Sunday afternoon. Wilkes took game one, 10-2 before coming back from a 6-3 deficit to win the second game 7-6. The Bloodhounds drop to 4-10 overall and remain at 1-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. Wilkes improves to 4-16 overall on the season.
 
John Jay took an early lead in the top of the first inning as senior Kalyssa Daley lead off with a single and later scored on a one-out single by junior Jessica Zaccari. Senior Marlin Rallas, who reached with a single to centerfield, would later score on an error by the Wilkes shortstop. The Bloodhounds offense went silent for the remainder of the game as Wilkes would go on to take game one 10-2.
Junior Sara McKenna went the distance for John Jay, allowing 10 runs (five earned) on 11 hits, with two strikeouts.
 
In game two, the Lady Colonels took an early lead in the first inning after senior Jordan Borger hit a two-run homerun. John Jay would begin to chip away in the top of the third inning as Daley would lace a one-out double to center field, senior Lana Kovac then reached on an error advancing Daley and a double-steal by both teammates pushed across a run.
 
The Bloodhounds' bats exploded in the top of the fourth, as they scored five runs on four hits. After two walks by Jennifer Varela and Jamie Lam, freshman Alinda Nicaj singled to load the bases. Freshman shortstop Jennifer Pace ripped a two-run single up the middle and ended up in scoring position on the throw. Daley then knocked in two more runs on a double to right center, scoring Pace and Nicaj to give the Bloodhounds a 6-3 lead.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Wilkes responded with four runs on four hits and two Bloodhound errors which put the Lady Colonels up 7-6. John Jay would go quietly in the seventh.
McKenna went the distance in game two giving up seven runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out three.
 
The Bloodhounds are back in action tomorrow, for a non-conference double header at home against Purchase College at Randall's Island, starting at 3:00pm.
