Box Score The softball team defeated York College, 11-9, in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon in Flushing, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 5-10 on the season and 2-3 in CUNYAC. The Cardinals fall to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
York got off to an early 2-0 lead but the Bloodhounds responded by scoring one in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, junior
Sara McKenna, who was also on the mound, laced an RBI single to cut the lead down to one. In the top of the second, the Cardinals increased the lead to 6-1 on four hits and one error in the inning.
John Jay started chipping at the lead in the third inning when seniors
Kalyssa Daley and
Lana Kovac were on second and third, respectively. Daley would score on a wild pitch and senior
Marlin Rallas would drive in Kovac with an RBI single.
In the bottom of the third inning, junior
Jennifer Varela led off with a single and stole second. Junior
Jessica Zaccari drove home Varela on an RBI single and would later score on a wild pitch and error.
With the Bloodhounds trailing 6-5 heading into the fourth inning, the bats would wake up. John Jay would score six runs in the inning courtesy of a two-run single by McKenna, RBI single by freshman
Jennifer Pace, and two-run single by Daley.
The Cardinals answered in the top of the six by scoring three runs to cut the Bloodhound lead to 11-9. Fortunately, McKenna retired the last batter on a double play to give the Bloodhounds their second conference win.
John Jay pounded out 13 hits on the day. Daley, Kovac, Varela, McKenna, and Pace recorded two hits each. Varela also swiped three bases and McKenna and Daley had three and two RBI's, respectively. On the hill, McKenna threw a complete game and struck out six.
