Baseball Defeated by Baruch Bearcats on Day Two

Box Score The baseball team lost to Baruch College, 11-4, on Thursday afternoon on Day Two of the CUNYAC championship at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds end the season with an overall record of 7-25 and conference record of 4-6. 

John Jay got on the scoreboard in the first inning when senior Nico Rivera singled and then stole second. The next batter, junior Nestor Amarante drove in Rivera with an RBI single.

The Bearcats responded right away as they scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning on three hits and one error. However, the Bloodhounds cut the deficit in the top of the second. Freshman R.J. Davila led off with a single and stole second. Later in the inning, he advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs, sophomore Esteban Soler singled up the middle to score Davila and cut the deficit to one.

In the bottom of the third, the Bearcats plated two unearned runs and led 5-2. Once again, the Bloodhounds responded in the following frame. With two outs in the inning, sophomore Nick Gioia walked and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Joe Jacobsen. With two outs and runners at the corners, Soler picked up another two-out RBI. Baruch tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning to lead 6-3.

In the top of the sixth, John Jay loaded the bases with no outs courtesy of a walk by junior Noel Sanchez, and singles by Davila and Gioia. Jacobsen drove in a run on an RBI ground out but the Bloodhounds could not score any more runs in the inning.

Baruch broke open the game in the bottom of the eighth when they recorded five runs and three hits in the inning to lead 11-4. John Jay could not score in the top half of the ninth and as a result, the Bloodhounds were eliminated from the CUNYAC Tournament.   

Rivera got the start and threw 7.1 innings and struck out seven. Davila registered two hits and a stolen base. Soler finished the day going 2-for-2 with two RBI's and one stolen base. Amarante and Jacobsen picked up the other RBI's. 

This game turned out to be the final one of Ronald Barillas, Nico Rivera, Corry Harper, and Pedro Acosta's collegiate career. The Athletics Department wishes them the best of luck in the future!
