Cunningham Records Double-Double as Bloodhounds Lose to Hunter

The women's basketball team lost to Hunter College, 78-65, on Friday evening at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The Bloodhounds drop to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks improve to 3-7 on the season and 1-3 in CUNYAC. 

The Bloodhounds got off to an early 6-1 lead courtesy of a jumper by sophomore Brianna Cunningham and a three-pointer by junior Terri Chu. With 14:05 remaining in the half, Hunter took its first lead of the contest, 8-6. 

John Jay regained the lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Josephine Diaz. The next three minutes went back and forth with both teams hitting shots. Halfway through the first half, Hunter led 18-15. 

The Hawks increased the lead back up to four but a jumper by Cunningham and a lay-up by senior Aneska Tejada cut the deficit to 22-19. With 3:05 remaining in the half, the Bloodhounds went on a 9-0 run. Heading into halftime, John Jay trailed 39-34. 

Chu led the Bloodhounds with 12 points and Cunningham had 10 points and three blocks. John Jay went 13-for-36 (36.1%) from the floor while the Hawks were 16-for-35 (45.7%). 

In the second half, Hunter quickly increased their lead to seven but a three-pointer by sophomore Jennifer Walsh cut the lead to 41-37. Five minutes in, the Hawks led by 12 but another three from Walsh cut the deficit to nine. 

With 8:12 left in the contest and Hunter leading 64-53, the Hawks hit consecutive baskets to lead by 15. The guests would go on to win the conference game and improve to 3-7 overall. 

Cunningham finished with her sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 26 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, and three blocks. Diaz recorded 14 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Chu added 12 points and Tejada grabbed five rebounds. Walsh came off the bench and registered eight points and six rebounds. Sophomore Claire Prince swiped a team-high two steals. 

The Bloodhounds are back at it on Tuesday, January 6, when they travel to Baruch College for a game at 5:30pm.
