Softball Picks Up First Win of Season; Split on Day 2 in Myrtle Beach

The softball team recorded their first win of the season on Monday. The Bloodhounds fell to Gwynedd Mercy, 5-3, in Game 1 but then defeated Rosemont College, 16-7. John Jay is now 1-3 on the season.

In Game 1, the Griffins got off to an early 1-0 lead but the Bloodhounds responded with three runs in the second inning to take the lead. Gwynedd Mercy tied the game at three apiece in the third. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Griffins took a 5-3 advantage and would go on to win by that score.

"The meat of the line-up sparked the offense in game one," head coach Catherine Alves said. "With slightly tighter defense, we would have achieved an upset in game one."

Freshman Danielle Minaya and senior Jennifer Varela picked up two hits each. Senior Jessica Zaccari, junior Jamie Lam, and freshman Nalena Cruzado recorded an RBI each. Senior Jocelyn Ocasio swiped her first base of the season. Senior Sara McKenna pitched her third complete game in two days. McKenna allowed five runs (three earned) and struck out one.

In Game 2, John Jay jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first. The Ravens responded in the bottom half of the inning by scoring three runs to tie the score. Rosemont took their first lead of the contest in the second inning when they led 4-3. In the following frame, the Bloodhounds scored five runs in the inning to lead 8-5. John Jay broke open the game in the fourth when the Bloodhounds batted around to increase its lead to 16-5.

"The offense was explosive in our second contest today," said Alves. "It provided breathing room for our pitching staff and allowed us to test our line-up's flexibility."

Sophomore Jennifer Pace went 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Varela went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and a game-high four runs. Zaccari registered two hits and three RBI's. Minaya had two hits and Ocasio drove in two runs. Junior Alinda Nicaj got the start and threw 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, five runs (two earned), and struck out three.

The Bloodhounds will face Neumann University and Wilkes University on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
