The softball team lost two games to Hunter College, 8-3 and 8-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds fall to 10-14 on the season and 3-5 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks improve to 14-2 overall and 9-2 in the conference.
In game one, Hunter jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. In the top of the fourth, sophomore
Danielle Minaya led off with her first homerun of the season to cut the deficit to one. With one out, freshman
Lisa Pellegrino doubled and was driven in by a RBI single by senior
Jennifer Varela.
The Hawks responded in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 6-2. In the top of the sixth with John Jay trailing by four, Pellegrino reached base on a single and scored on a RBI double by freshman
Nalena Cruzado.
Hunter added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth and would go on to win by a score of 8-3.
McKenna threw six innings, allowing seven earned runs and struck out six. Pellegrino finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Minaya and Varela recorded a RBI and run each. Senior
Jocelyn Ocasio swiped a base.
Game two started with Minaya reaching base on an error and sophomore
Jennifer Pace singling. With one out, Minaya stole third and Pace stole second to give the Bloodhounds second and third. Senior
Jessica Zaccari then delivered a two-out two-run single to put John Jay up 2-0.
The Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the first and tied the game at two apiece in the third. In the top of the fifth, sophomore
Michelle Atiq led off with a single. John Jay would take a 3-2 lead after Minaya drove in Atiq with a RBI double.
Unfortunately, Hunter regained a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the inning and added four runs in the sixth to win, 8-3.
Pellegrino got the start and pitched five innings, gave up four earned runs, and struck out four. Minaya picked up a RBI, run, and stolen base. Zaccari had two RBI's and Pace and junior
Alinda Nicaj scored a run each.
The Bloodhounds are back at it on Thursday, April 16, when they host Rutgers-Camden at 3:30 p.m. at Randall's Island.
