Women's Basketball Falls to Medgar Evers

The women's basketball team lost to Medgar Evers College, 68-51, on Wednesday evening at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 3-10 on the year and 1-6 in the conference. The Cougars improve to 1-13 overall and 1-6 in CUNYAC.

Junior Shaliyah Ruiz recorded a team-high 14 points, on 5-of-9 shooting, with five rebounds, and two steals. Senior Terri Chu registered 12 points and junior Cassandra Taylor picked up 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal. Senior Amber Villegas added a team-high 11 rebounds and a team-high five assists. Sophomore Dana Nicholson had seven points, four rebounds, and a team-high three steals. 

The Cougars started the game with a 6-0 lead but with 3:53 remaining, John Jay cut the deficit to 10-8. At the end of the first quarter, Medgar led 14-12. Early on in the second stanza, both teams exchanged buckets. Up one, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to lead 23-15 with 6:40 on the clock. John Jay went on a 15-4 run to give them their first lead of the game, 30-27. However, Medgar Evers ended the half on an 11-2 run to take a six-point advantage heading into halftime. 

John Jay opened the third quarter recording the first five points to cut the deficit to one. Once again, the Cougars responded by scoring 12 straight to lead 50-37 with 1:44 left in the quarter. In the final period, the guests increased its lead to 18 with 5:18 remaining. Medgar Evers would go on to pick up their first conference win since February 11, 2011, by a final score of 68-51. 

John Jay finished 19-for-60 (31.7%) from the floor, 3-for-17 (17.6%) from behind the arc, and 10-for-15 (66.7) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds host York College on Friday, January 15, for a conference game at 6:00 pm.
