Nwaigwe Scores 12 in Women's Basketball's Loss to Centenary

The women's basketball team lost to Centernary University (NJ), 73-48, on Monday evening in Hackettstown, NJ. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-9 on the season. The Cyclones improve to 7-2. 

Freshman Uju Nwaigwe led John Jay with a team-high 12 points, on 5-of-11 shooting, five rebounds, one block, and one steal. Senior Shaliyah Ruiz recorded 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Senior Claire Prince fell three points shy of a double-double with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Junior Dana Nicholson added eight points and sophomore Karen Rosario grabbed six boards. 

Senior Cassandra Taylor got the Bloodhounds on the scoreboard first with a jumper but Centenary followed on a 7-0 run. John Jay cut the deficit to two but the hosts scored 10 of the quarter's next 12 points to lead 17-7. At the end of the first, the Bloodhounds trailed 19-9. With 7:24 left in the second, the Cyclones increased their lead to 16. Centenary held a 39-18 advantage after the first twenty minutes. 

The home team began the third period on a 15-0 run. John Jay cut the deficit to 61-28 at the end of the quarter. The Bloodhounds outscored the Cyclones 20-12 in the fourth. 

John Jay went 19-for-59 (32.2%) from the floor, 2-for-13 (15.4%) from behind the arc, and 8-for-20 (40.0%) from the free throw line. 

The Bloodhounds will have now have two weeks off for finals. Their next game will be on Wednesday, December 28, against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford at the Doghouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
