Pellegrino's Three Home Runs Propels Softball to Doubleheader Sweep of Lehman

The softball team swept Lehman College, 9-3 and 14-13, on Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Lehman College. The Bloodhounds improve to 4-2 overall and are a perfect 4-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Lightning drop to 1-11 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.

In game one with no score in the fourth inning, sophomore Lisa Pellegrino belted a two run homer to center field to give John Jay an early 2-0 lead. In the fifth inning with two outs, junior Jennifer Pace recorded an RBI single to right field. With the bases loaded, Pellegrino blasted a grand slam to left center field, her second home run of the game, to give the Bloodhounds a 7-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lehman chipped at the lead and scored three to trail by four runs. In John Jay's next frame, freshman Karan Rosario and sophomore Vanessa Rodriguez added RBI singles to increase the Bloodhounds' lead back up to six. John Jay would take game one by a final score of 9-3.

Not only did Pellegrino do it in the box, but she did it on the mound. The New Hyde Park native threw a complete game, allowing four hits, three runs (none earned), two walks, and struck out six. Offensively, she finished 3-for-4 with a game-high six RBI's and two runs scored. Junior Michelle Atiq went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Pace picked up a hit, RBI, one run scored, one stolen base, and two walks.

In game two, Pellegrino picked up from where she left off in game one. She hit a solo homer to right center field in the second inning. John Jay was not finished there. Pace capped off the inning with an RBI single down the right field line to put John Jay up 4-0.

Lehman responded in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4. The Bloodhounds fired back to regain the lead in the top of the fourth, 8-4. In the top of the fifth, senior Amber Villegas picked up a two-out RBI double to score Rosario. Lehman fought back to tie the game and at the end of five full innings, the score was tied 9-9.

In the top of the seventh, John Jay plated five runs on three hits and two errors. The Lightning made a late comeback in the bottom half but eventually fell by a final score of 14-13.

Villegas was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI's, and three runs. Freshman Star Manzeuta and junior Shaliyah Ruiz registered two hits and two runs each. Pellegrino went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Junior Alinda Nicaj got the start and pitched four innings. Pellegrino came in in relief and picked up the win after throwing the final three innings and allowing no earned runs.

The Bloodhounds travel to Sarah Lawrence on Thursday, March 31, for a non-conference game at 5:00 pm.
