Baseball Splits With Lehman in CUNYAC Opener; Napier Records Win Throwing Complete Game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The baseball team split a doubleheader with Lehman College in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Fordham University. The Bloodhounds fell in game one, 5-3, and rebounded to take the second game, 8-2. The Bloodhounds are now 3-9 on the season and 1-1 in CUNYAC. The Lightning are now 6-8 and 3-1 in the conference. 

In game one, the Bloodhound scored first as senior Brian Garcia knocked in sophomore Sean Napier with an RBI single. The Lightning took their first lead after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third. 

In the fifth, junior C.J. Meyer crossed home plate on a balk to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the bottom half of the inning, John Jay had bases loaded with one out but could not score. 

Lehman added two insurance runs in the seventh. In the last inning, junior Dylan Locke recorded a pinch-hit RBI single but the Bloodhounds would lose by a final score of 5-3. 

Senior Christian Rodriguez got the nod and threw a complete game allowing nine hits, five runs (three earned), one walk, and struck out five. Meyer went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Freshman Phil Bellomo picked up a double. 

In game two, Lehman quickly got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. The Bloodhounds responded with three runs in the bottom half. Napier scored the first run and with two outs, Bellomo came through with a two-out two-run single to put John Jay ahead 3-2. 

After the first inning, starting pitcher Sean Napier settled down and did not allow another run. The right-hander pitched a complete game allowing eight hits, two runs, and struck out three. 

In the bottom of the fourth, junior Jurrel Diaz blasted a two-run homer to right field to increase the lead to 5-2. Later on in the inning, junior Alexis Martinez knocked in senior Ryan Osborne with an RBI double to put the Bloodhounds ahead 7-2. John Jay added an insurance run in the sixth as Garcia scored on a wild pitch. 

Napier and Garcia scored a pair of runs each. Garcia, Osborne, and Martinez all swiped a base. 

The Bloodhounds travel to the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Wednesday, March 28, for a non-conference game at 4:15.
