Box Score 2 The softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against the College of Saint Elizabeth on Sunday afternoon at Civic Center Park in Carteret, NJ. The Bloodhounds are now 3-7 on the season. The Eagles are now 5-5.
In game one, sophomore
Jessica Barbaria went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. Freshman
Tommi Mandell finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's and a pair of runs. Junior
Inelza Salcedo smacked a three-run homer and freshman
AnneMarie Rivera picked up two RBI's. Sophomore
Mariela Guzman went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and an RBI.
John Jay jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first as Pellegrino singled in Barbaria. St. Elizabeth responded with two runs in the first and three in the second to lead 5-1 after three full innings.
In the top of the fourth, Salcedo homered to center field to cut the deficit to 5-4. In John Jay's next frame, Guzman drove in Mandell with an RBI single. Trailing by one with one out, A. Rivera knocked in Guzman and Barbaria with a two-run single to give the Bloodhounds a 7-6 advantage.
The hosts then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead 11-7. In the sixth, Mandell recorded a two-run single and Barbaria followed with an RBI ground out to trim the deficit to 11-10. The Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh to hold on for a 12-10 victory.
In game two, senior
Lisa Pellegrino finished 2-for-4 with her first homer of the season, three RBI's, and three runs scored. Barbaria and Guzman went a combined 4-for-7 with five runs scored. Sophomore
Marissa Artz was 2-for-2 with an RBI. A. Rivera registered three RBI's and sophomore
Ashley Quinones swiped two bases.
In the circle, A. Rivera collected her second win of the season after throwing a complete game and striking out three.
The Bloodhounds broke open the game in the first inning with six runs. Pellegrino, sophomore
Karen Rosario, A. Rivera, Salcedo, and Artz all recorded RBI's in the inning. John Jay scored in every inning as they pounded out 14 hits in five innings.
The Bloodhounds travel to St. Joseph's College Long Island on Tuesday, March 27, for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
