Softball Splits With Baruch in CUNYAC Opener; A. Rivera Records Third Win in Circle

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The softball team split a CUNYAC doubleheader against Baruch College on Thursday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds fell in game one, 9-6, but then rebounded to take the second game, 7-2. John Jay is now 4-16 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. The Bearcats are now 9-7 and 5-1 in CUNYAC. 

In game one, senior Lisa Pellegrino finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Freshmen Tommi Mandell and AnneMarie Rivera picked up two hits and a run each. Freshman Betsy Rivera registered two RBI's. Sophomore Jessica Barbaria blasted her team-leading third homer of the season. 

Lisa Pellegrino got the start and threw a complete game allowing nine hits, two earned runs, and no walks. 

The Bloodhounds opened the scoring in the first when Pellegrino knocked in Mandell with an RBI single. In the next frame, sophomore Ashley Quinones and AnneMarie Rivera crossed home plate to increase the lead to 3-0. 

Baruch answered with two in the second, three in the third, and four in the fourth to take a 9-3 lead. In the fifth, Barbaria crushed a solo home run and B. Rivera picked up a pinch-hit  two-run single as the Bloodhounds would drop game one.  

In game two, sophomore Mariela Guzman was 3-for-4 with a double and game-high three runs scored. Barbaria finished 2-for-4 with a double and run. Freshman Samantha Gresser registered one hit and two RBI's. Sophomore Devika Prashad had two stolen bases. 

In the circle, A. Rivera pitched 5.1 innings in relief and allowed four hits, one run, two walks, and struck out three. 

In the top of the fifth, Prashad scored John Jay's first run on a wild pitch. The Bearcats followed with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. 

The Bloodhounds took the lead in the fifth after Guzman scored a run. In the top of the sixth, Gresser came through with a clutch two-out two-run single to increase the lead to 4-1. 

Baruch trimmed the deficit to 4-2 after scoring one. In the top of the seventh, John Jay broke open the game with three runs courtesy of an RBI double by Pellegrino. 

The Bloodhounds host York College on Tuesday, April 17, for a conference doubleheader at 3:30 pm at Randall's Island Field 16.
