Baseball Sweeps Maine Presque Isle, 1-0 & 4-3; Rodriguez Notches 10th Career Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The baseball team swept the University of Maine Presque Isle, 1-0 and 4-3 (8 innings), on Sunday afternoon at Fordham University in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds improve to 8-13 on the year and 3-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Owls drop to 2-22 and 1-8 in the conference. 

In game one, Christian Rodriguez recorded his 10th collegiate win after throwing a complete game shutout. The senior allowed eight hits, no walks, and struck out a season-high seven. Junior Steven Catuogno went 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and John Jay's lone run scored. Senior Ryan Osborne registered an RBI and junior C.J. Meyer finished 1-for-2. 

With the score knotted at 0-0 in the top of the fourth, the first two Owls batters singled. With first and third and one out, senior Robert Moncino threw out a potential base stealer at second base. Rodriguez then retired the next batter to keep the game scoreless. 

In the bottom half of the inning, Catuogno led off with a single and stole second. A sacrifice bunt by junior Alexis Martinez advanced Catuogno to third. Osborne drove in Catuogno on an RBI ground out. 

In the top of the seventh, Maine Presque Isle led off with a double. With one out, freshman Phillip Bellomo laid out in the hole to keep a base hit in the infield and not allow the run to score. Rodriguez was able to get out of the jam and hold on for the 1-0 win.  

In game two, Bellomo was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI's, and a stolen base. Junior Dylan Locke finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI's. Senior Brian Garcia went 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. 

Sophomore Sean Napier got the start and threw six innings allowing six hits, three runs, two walks, and struck out five. Sophomore Danny Wynne picked up his first win of the year after pitching two scoreless innings in relief and allowing two hits while striking out two. 

In the top of the third, the Owls scored two runs on a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead. The Bloodhounds responded in the bottom of the fourth when Locke lined a base hit to center field to plate Garcia to cut the deficit to 2-1. 

Maine Presque Isle added an insurance run in the sixth to increase their lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh with one out, junior Jurrel Diaz and Catuogno reached on back-to-back walks. Bellomo then laced a two-run double down the left field line to tie the game. 

Wynne escaped a two-out jam in the top of the eighth with a fly out. In the bottom half of the inning, Garcia walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out and Garcia on third, Locke drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly to seal the sweep for John Jay. 

The Bloodhounds face Yeshiva University on Tuesday, April 17, for a doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm at Overpeck Park in Ridgefield Park, NJ.
