Diaz's Walk-Off Three-Run Homer Propels Baseball to Sweep over CCNY on Senior & Alumni Day: Rodriguez & Napier Notch Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The baseball team swept City College (CCNY), 8-5 and 9-2, on Saturday afternoon at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY. The Bloodhounds improve to 12-14 on the season and 5-3 in CUNYAC. The Beavers drop to 10-18 and 6-4 in the conference. 

In game one, CCNY stormed out to a three-run lead and added a run in the second to go up 4-0. In the bottom half of the inning, senior Robert Moncino smacked a three-run homer to center field to cut the deficit to 4-3. 

After the second, senior Christian Rodriguez regained his ace form and did not allow another run for the next five innings. With the Bloodhounds still trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Robert Moncino and junior Jurrel Diaz picked up back-to-back hits. Junior Steven Catuogno came through with an RBI single to tie the score as the game would go to extras. 

CCNY regained the lead after a solo homer in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half, junior C.J. Meyer singled and freshman Connor Stern walked with one out. Diaz then crushed a game-winning three-run homer to right field to give the Bloodhounds an 8-5 victory. 

Moncino finished 3-for-3 with three RBI's. Diaz went 2-for-4 with three RBI's. Meyer was 2-for-4 with a double and pair of runs. 

Rodriguez picked up his 11th win of the season after throwing eight innings and allowing five runs, two walks, and struck out seven. 

In game two, the Beavers once again jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first. With two outs and the bases loaded, Meyer delivered a two-run single and senior Brian Garcia scored John Jay's third run on an error by the catcher. 

In the bottom of the third, Garcia smacked a two-run triple to right center to plate senior Ryan Osborne and junior William De La Cruz to increase the lead to 5-1. 

CCNY cut the lead down to 5-2 after a solo home run. In the next frame, the Bloodhounds responded as junior Alexis Martinez, Osborne, and De La Cruz registered two-out back-to-back-to-back RBI's to break open the game as John Jay led 8-2. 

Sophomore Sean Napier picked up his third win of the year after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing five hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out two. Senior Joe Gregory came in to pick up the final out. 

Martinez went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Garcia was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI's. Osborne had a hit, stolen base, and three runs. Meyer finished with two RBI's. 

Before the game, the Athletics Department honored seniors William De La Cruz, Brian Garcia, Joe Gregory, Dylan Locke, Alexis MartinezC.J. Meyer, Robert Moncino, Ryan Osborne, and Christian Rodriguez who competed in their final regular season game of their collegiate careers. 

In addition, the baseball program and Athletics Department celebrated Alumni Day and recognized over 30 alumni in attendance including those who were on the 1980's championship teams.
