Box Score 2 The softball team swept Brooklyn College, 10-3 and 9-5, in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds improve to 8-20 on the year and get back to .500 in CUNYAC at 5-5. The Bulldogs drop to 5-19 and 2-10 in conference play.
In game one, senior
Lisa Pellegrino notched her third win of the season after throwing a complete game and allowing three runs while striking out seven. Freshman
Samantha Gresser went 2-for-3 and sophomore
Ashley Quinones recorded a hit and pair of RBI's. Pellegrino and sophomore
Mariela Guzman finished with a double each. Sophomore
Jessica Barbaria and freshman
Tommi Mandell swiped two bases each.
John Jay jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two full innings. In the third, Brooklyn cut the deficit to 6-3. The Bloodhounds responded with four in the fourth to take the first game.
In game two, Pellegrino led the offense going 3-for-5 with two homers, five RBI's, and two runs scored. Junior
Inelza Salcedo went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs. Mandell registered two hits, two runs, and a game-high three stolen bases.
Freshman
AnneMarie Rivera recorded her fifth win after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing three runs. Pellegrino came in for the final five outs to secure her first save of the year.
In the first inning, Pellegrino belted a solo home run to left field. In the next frame, A. Rivera, Salcedo, Mandell, and Pellegrino all recorded RBI hits as the Bloodhounds led 5-0 after two full innings.
With John Jay up 6-0, the Bulldogs chipped away at the lead with five runs in the sixth inning but Pellegrino came in to pitch and limited the damage by recording back-to-back outs. She then helped her own cause by crushing a three-run homer, her team-leading fifth of the season, to add insurance runs as John Jay would hold on for a 9-5 victory.
The Bloodhounds face the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday, April 26, at Westchester Community College for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
