Box Score 2 The baseball team split a conference doubleheader against Baruch College on Saturday afternoon at Bronx Community College in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds lost the first game, 7-2, but rebounded to take game two, 16-3. The Bloodhounds end the regular season with their best record since 2008 at 13-15. Baruch is now 10-19-1 and 6-6 in CUNYAC.
In game one, junior
Steven Catuogno led the offense going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Senior
Ryan Osborne and junior
Jurrel Diaz picked up a double and triple, respectively. Senior
Robert Moncino and freshman Phil Bellomo recorded a hit and run scored each. Senior
Christian Rodriguez got the start and threw four innings. Sophomore
Danny Wynne pitched the final two frames.
Baruch open the game with four runs in the first. Heading into the top of the fifth, Diaz drove in Moncino with an RBI triple to cut the deficit to 5-1. The Bearcats responded with two runs. Sophomore
Sean Napier drew a bases loaded walk in the seventh for John Jay's second run.
In game two, Osborne went 3-for-4 with a homer, four runs, three RBI's, and a stolen base. Senior
Brian Garcia finished 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI's, and two runs scored. Diaz had two RBI's and junior
Alexis Martinez added two hits, two runs, and a stolen base.
Napier notched his team-leading fourth win of the season after throwing six innings and allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned), and struck out two.
The Bloodhounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first after Garcia crushed a three-run homer to right field for his second home run of the year. The hosts followed with three in the second to even the score.
In the top of the third, John Jay broke open the contest with five runs on six hits. Junior
William De La Cruz, junior
C.J. Meyer, Moncino, and Diaz all recorded RBI's in the inning.
With the Bloodhounds leading 10-3 in the fifth, Osborne blasted a three-run homer to increase the lead to 10. It was Osborne's third home run of the season.
John Jay finished the game with 15 hits.
The Bloodhounds secured the #2 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC postseason tournament. John Jay will host #7 University of Maine Presque Isle on Thursday, May 3, in a single elimination nine-inning game. Game time and location will be posted in the coming days.
