Box Score 2 The #2 baseball team came back with a walk-off 8-7 win against #7 Maine Presque Isle in a single-elimination game on Thursday morning at Purchase College. The Bloodhounds then followed that with an 11-7 victory over #6 Finlandia University to advance to the winners bracket of the CUNYAC postseason tournament. John Jay improves to 15-15 on the season.
In game one, the Bloodhounds opened with four runs in the opening frame. Senior
Ryan Osborne picked up a two-run inside-the-park homer to left for his fourth of the season. Junior
William De La Cruz followed by crushing a solo home run over the scoreboard for his first of the year. Senior
Robert Moncino drove in the fourth run with an RBI ground out to score senior
Brian Garcia.
In the top of the second, the Owls cut the deficit in half to 4-2. In Maine's next frame, the Owls picked up four hits to take their first lead of the game, 7-4.
A run scored by junior
Steven Catuogno cut the lead down to 7-5 in the fourth. The Bloodhounds tied the game on a two-out two-run double by junior
Alexis Martinez.
Sophomore
Danny Wynne came in relief in the third and did not allow a run through the next six innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Moncino walked and junior
Jurrel Diaz singled with one out. Catuogno came through with a walk-off RBI single to center field to score pinch runner junior
Dylan Locke to complete the comeback.
Wynne registered his third win of the season after throwing 6.1 innings. The right-hander allowed three hits, no runs, and struck out five. Catuogno finished 4-for-6 with a double, three runs scored, and an RBI. Junior
C.J. Meyer went 2-for-4 and Martinez and Osborne recorded two RBI's each. Martinez also had two stolen bases.
In game two, De La Cruz got the Bloodhounds off to an early lead with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the second, Diaz and Catuogno picked up RBI hits to increase the lead to 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, Finlandia plated four runs to tie the game, 4-4. With John Jay leading 5-4 in the top of the sixth, the Lions scored two runs to regain the lead. A sacrifice fly by Martinez in the bottom half of the inning evened the score at 6-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, John Jay broken open the game with four runs. Freshman
Philip Bellomo registered a sacrifice fly, Moncino doubled in Meyer, Catuogno drove in Diaz and Moncino with a two-run triple, and Osborne brought home Catuogno to put the Bloodhounds ahead 11-6 as John Jay would not look back.
Senior
Joe Gregory picked up his second win of the year after throwing three innings and allowing three hits, one run, and struck out three. Senior
Christian Rodriguez got the start and pitched the first six innings.
Catuogno went 3-for-5 with three RBI's and three runs scored. Garcia finished 2-for-5 and Diaz scored three runs. Osborne swiped two bases.
The Bloodhounds will now face #1 College of Staten Island in the winners bracket on Friday, May 4, at 3:00 pm in Staten Island. The loser of the game will play in a single-elimination game at 6:00 pm. The winner will advance to the CUNYAC Championship on Saturday, May 5, at 12:00 pm.
