Women's Soccer Battles Gwynedd Mercy to 2-2 Draw; Katie Healy Records First Collegiate Goal

The women's soccer team battled Gwynedd Mercy all afternoon long to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds are now 1-1-1 on the season while the Griffins are now 0-3-1. 

In the second minute, freshman Yomary Cordero made a perfect pass to freshman Gianna Russo who buried it to give John Jay an early 1-0 lead. It was Russo's third goal in her first three college games. The visitors answered in the 9th minute to tie the score. 

In the 17th minute, freshman Katie Healy scored her first collegiate goal after blasting a shot into the right corner. The Griffins responded to tie the game with 20 minutes left in the opening half. 

Sophomore Erika Estro recorded two saves in the first forty-five minutes. John Jay outshot Gwynedd Mercy by a margin of 6-4. 

The second half went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging scoring opportunities. The game was sent to overtime with the score remaining 2-2. The Bloodhounds finished the second period with nine shots and Estro made two saves. 

Both teams battled in the overtime periods but neither could find the back of the net. Healy finished with a game-high five shots and game-high four shots on goal. Freshman Lily Collins played stellar defense to go along with her three shots and two shots on goal. Sophomore Kimberly Robledo also registered three shots and two on goal. Estro finished the afternoon with five saves. 

The Bloodhounds are back in action on Monday, September 10, when they travel to Wesley College for a 4:30 pm non-conference match.
