The baseball team lost a doubleheader to Centenary University, 2-1 and 6-3, on Friday afternoon at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ. The Bloodhounds drop to 6-16 on the season. The Cyclones improve to 7-11.
The first game featured a pitcher's duel. Junior
Jared Hershfield threw six innings, allowing four hits, two runs, one walk, and struck out five.
With the game scoreless in the third, junior
Danny Wynne led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior
Joe Desilvio. Senior
Zach Hyde brought home Wynne with an RBI ground out to give the Bloodhounds a 1-0 lead.
The Cyclones responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. John Jay had a chance with two outs in the sixth but couldn't come through to tie the game.
Nunez finished 2-for-3. Senior
Steven Catuogno registered a hit and stolen base.
In game two, John Jay took an early 1-0 advantage in the first. The Bloodhounds tacked on another run in the third when junior
Sean Napier singled in a run. Leading 2-1 in the fourth, sophomore
Philip Bellomo delivered an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-1.
Centenary scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings to even the score at 3-3. The hosts plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth for the victory.
Hyde, Nunez, and Catuogno finished with a hit and run scored each. Napier got the start and delivered six innings and struck out four.
The Bloodhounds travel to St. Joseph's College Long Island on Tuesday, April 2, for a non-conference game at 4:30 pm.
