Softball Sweeps Cairn University; Inelza Salcedo Finishes 5-For-5 With Two Home Runs & Three RBI's

The softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep, 4-3 and 13-5, against Cairn University on Sunday afternoon at Randall's Island. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-10 on the season. The Highlanders drop to 7-13.

In game one, Cairn jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two full innings. In the bottom of the third, junior Jessica Barbaria scored a run to cut the deficit to one. In the fourth inning, senior Inelza Salcedo crushed a solo home run to left center to tie the ballgame at 2-2.

The Highlanders scored a run in the fifth but in the bottom half of the inning, junior Mariela Guzman delivered a two-out RBI double to plate Barbaria to once again even the score.

In the bottom of the seventh with the score tied, Barbaria led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. With runners at second and third with one out, junior Marissa Artz came through with a game-winning RBI single to give the Bloodhounds the victory.

Freshman Julianne Graepel picked up the win in the circle after throwing a complete game and allowing 11 hits and struck out six. Barbaria finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Salcedo went 3-for-3 and Graepel registered a hit and two stolen bases.

In game two, John Jay opened the scoring in the first as Graepel scored on a wild pitch. The guests tied the game in the second, but the Bloodhounds responded as Salcedo recorded a two-run homer, her second home run of the day.

In the fourth, sophomore AnneMarie Rivera smacked an RBI double to left center to score senior Devika Prashad. Later in the inning, Rivera crossed home plate on a wild pitch to put the Bloodhounds ahead 5-1. Cairn plated four runs in the fifth to tie the score, 5-5.

The Bloodhounds broke open the game in the sixth as they pounded out eight runs on eight hits to complete the doubleheader sweep. Salcedo, freshman Nicole Lopez, Guzman, Artz, and freshman Ashley Sclafani all picked up RBI's in the inning.

Rivera notched the win after firing six innings. She helped her own cause by going a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs. Salcedo finished 2-for-2 and Sclafani was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's. Lopez tallied a pair of RBI's.

The Bloodhounds travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
