New York, NY -- John Jay College of Criminal Justice named Mark Francis as the Interim Director of Athletics, Recreation, & Intramurals, Interim Vice President for Enrollment Management & Student Affairs Ellen Hartigan announced.

Francis was previously the Manager of John Jay's SEEK Academic Support program. During his 40 years of working in education, he has administered collegiate academic programs, taught different levels of math classes, and coached all levels of soccer. Francis looks forward, albeit briefly, to continue the exceptional academic and athletic successes that have been achieved by John Jay Athletics under the leadership of former Athletics Director Carol Kashow.

Before joining John Jay, Francis was a Learning Specialist, directing the Math Center for student-athletes at the University of Arizona. He developed a program that increased the graduation rates of athletes by improving success in mathematics classes.  He brought similar academic success to the John Jay SEEK Department/Program.

Francis brings varied coaching and administrative experiences to the position. His philosophy, adopted from Dr. Steven Van Ausdle, President Emeritus of Walla Walla Community College, holds that teachers should be coaches and coaches should be teachers. His time in athletics has been about teaching.

He is a graduate of Boys High School in Brooklyn, NY.  Francis earned a B.A. in Mathematics from Whitman College and a M.S. in Physical Education from Washington State University.
