Top Seed Women's Soccer Defeats No. 4 Seed Lehman, 4-0, To Advance To Fourth Straight CUNYAC Championship

New York, NY - The No. 1 seed and CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) regular season champions, the John Jay women's soccer team, will look for their third straight CUNYAC title after defeating the No. 4 seed, Lehman, 4-0, on Saturday morning.

With the win, the Bloodhounds improved to 11-2-2 while the Lightning finished the year at 2-9-0.

"Today's win was good as the team was focused and accomplished the task at hand," commented head coach Ajani Clunie. "We know what is at stake next Saturday. With hardwork and humility, we are going to have a strong week of practice to finish out the conference playoffs strong."

For John Jay, this marks fourth straight CUNYAC championship match that they will be competing in, on Saturday, November 5 and will look to make it three straight league championships after claiming the 2019 & 2021 titles.

The two teams were deadlocked for the majority of the opening half, despite the Bloodhounds holding a significant advantage on shot attempts.

With three minutes remaining until halftime, John Jay struck for the first goal. Sophomore forward Leylah Murad and senior midfielder Katie Healy strung together a well-executed give & go, with Murad spotting freshman forward Mikayla Schoch who was able to blast one past Lehman's Diallo Ramatoulaye, as the Bloodhounds took a 1-0 lead.

For Schoch, it marked her eighth goal of the season while Murad notched her second assist and for Healy, it marked her team-leading ninth helper of the season.

When play resumed for the second half, the Bloodhounds were awarded a penalty kick after Lehman was called for a foul in the box.

Jillian Golden stepped up and booted one to the right, just out of the reach of Ramatoulaye, as the Bloodhounds went ahead 2-0.

Graduate midfielder Kayla Kelly capped off the scoring for the Bloodhounds, recording a pair of goals a minute apart as John Jay built a 4-0 advantage.

Kelly's first tally came off the feed from Brooke Fontaine, who registered her sixth helper of the season. Kelly netted her sixth goal of the season after stealing the ball away.

John Jay will look for the three-peat on Saturday, November 5 as the Bloodhounds will take on the No. 2 seeded CCNY Beavers at Queens College with a trip to the NCAA Regionals on the line.

Kickoff is set for noon from Varsity Soccer Field with the match being streamed on Facebook Live.
